Can you already smell Fall in the air? October’s a great time to do garden chores…summer’s finally gone—and we get lots of summer here.
It’s cooler to work in the garden. We have to take fewer breaks from the heat. And we all feel invigorated and ready to feel our gardening passion instead of fighting the sun’s scorching rays.
Right now, we should be:
- Planting vegetables like lettuce, spinach, kale, radishes, broccoli, onions, and herbs like cilantro, parsley, and chives.
- Planting native plants. Native plants are probably the easiest to plant, either from seed or from nurseries. Go here for more info about planting many natives.
Maintaining our watering, weeding, and mulching chores.
Prepping our garden by getting a soil test (see your local county agent), starting a compost pile, if you haven’t already (great use for fall leaves and kitchen scraps to add to your garden).
Clean your garden tools, drain your lawnmower (warm season grass goes dormant in the winter), and sharpen your pruners, hoes, and spades.
And have bumper crops
